Ka Chad Sukra is a Cultural Festival of Pnar people of Jaintia Hills District, in other word it can be called a culture of get togetherness. Literally, Chad Sukra derived from the three pnar word “Chad-Suk-Kara”. ‘Chad’ means dance, ‘Suk’ means happiness or joy and ‘kara’ means healthy of mind, body corroborate with economically soundness expressing solidarity, Love and thankfulness to “U Tre Kirod[Almighty God] with merriment and dance.  It is observed before sowing season after one the Behdeinkhlam’s ritual called “Ka Thoh Langdoh” which is related to sowing of seeds performed by “U Lyngdoh”.

Although “Chad Sukra” is unlike “Behdeinkhlam Festival” but it has its own uniqueness and attractiveness because this is the only festival where the traditional dances of Jaintia Hills District are displayed by different localities and performed it to their best for the name and fame of their respective locality.

Notwithstanding the facts that the Chad Sukra is an old tradition and custom practice since time of immemorial which is commonly known as “Bamphalar” and perpetuate till date but the Cultural Procession know as “Mih Iaw” was revived later in the year 2006. It was partially stopped for almost 50 years and during those periods only Ka Bamphalar was observed.

Bamphalar means staging of Drama, Comedy and variety Show followed by a Communion Feast. The cultural procession “Ka Mih Iaw-Mih Loom” is an essence of Ka Chad Sukra festival because this brings the message to the general public signaling the beginning of the sowing season. So the last 50 years of it absent has partially scrubbed down its very meaning. The reasons to it abandonment is of the fact that it was organized in scattered manner by the individual locality one after another tone down its splendor as the capacity to organized colourfully is out of their financial capacity.

To resurrect the Chad Sukra culture, Seinraij, Jowai as a custodian of tradition culture brings all the localities that are still practicing “Bamphalar” and organized “Ka Chad Sukra Festival” under one umbrella. From the 2006 onwards on revival of Cultural Procession adhesive to the “Bamphalar” restore the true sense of “Ka Chad Sukra Festival”. This festival is observed for 2 (two) days that is on Sngi Musiang and Sngi Muchai (a market days of Pnar people) and started with a prayer from “U Daloi”,the religious head & “U Langdoh” and “the elders” follow by staging of Drama, Comedy and variety show.

On the next day, the festival turns into a big cultural event as the crowd assembly at Myngkoi Pyrdi ready for cultural procession and before they moves to the Iawmusiang (Market), there are cultural display performed by different localities. The following are the main cultural dances performed by the localities are:-

Chad Pliang: - This dance signifies an expression of thankfulness to Almighty God (U Trekirot) of his blessing for abundance agricultural produced and spares the humanity from starvation.

Chad Nongrep :- Dance depicting the life style of the farmers. From the wording of the song one can understand the indebtedness and thankfulness of Farmer to Mother Nature. The Dance is an honour to Mother Nature abreast exhibit their loves, admiration and contentment of the profession as endowed to them.

Chad Rwa :- Chad Rwa is a colourful group dance perform by  young girls dressed with traditional attire transient replica symbolizing the blooms of colourful flowers. It gives the message of hope that the joyfulness of sowing season is on.

Chad kiehke/chad kynjiaw: This is also a group dance which expresses the importance of having fun at work. In this dance the boys and the girls poke fun at each other abreast engaging in their work in the paddy field.

Chad khyrwoh:- It is a romantic couple dance displays the traditional way of proposing  girlfriend. Those who witness this dance will automatically perceive and relived to their youth.

 Chad Kyndei: It is an action patriotic song and belief to be sang by the fighters while they prepare their swords and shield, bows and arrows in morale to each other to fight the enemy aggressively and to protect their kingdom from external forces while the women engaging in preparation of food for the fighter.

Ka Chad Sukra is a rich and magnificent cultural exhibition of pnar people, it is an occasion that brings everyone in one platform and raises the morale of oneness amongst all the people of the community.  This is the event where the young and old alike exhibit their inner talent in the activities of Music, Dance and Drama. The spirit of competition is very strong where each locality is coming out with the best song and the talented dancers. It is a time to show case the beauty and best outfit where everybody is out in their best traditional attire.
